Review:

The app needs an optimization update. Load times are sometimes agonizingly slow. If I get a 15 min XP booster, I feel like I sometimes waste up to half the time on loading screens. Despite this, I do enjoy the app and its content. It’s helped me get back into Spanish and I’m having more fun learning a language now than I ever have before in my life. I did purchase the year long subscription, but the app is perfectly serviceable with ads.
Update: down to 4 stars. Is Duolingo a victim of its own success? This app is getting excruciatingly slow and laggy. When you are awarded time-limited double XP, waiting 30 seconds, 60 seconds for the app to load the next page is frustrating. So many languages to choose from. Bite-sized lessons make it easy to practice here & there throughout the day. Dig the stories feature (not avail for all languages yet), and the voice actors are absolutey first rate!
I’m learning french and I’m actually learning very fast. Yes there are ads every once in a while but you can press the “x” button literally 3 seconds after the ads start so it’s not really disruptive. Especially because the ads do NOT come on during lessons but after every other lesson. It is going to be a bit harder to learn quickly if you don’t write down the word, meaning and pronunciation (if you need it like for Russian and other languages) I love Duolingo and I bet others will too!
Really love this app and look forward to using it everyday. The little characters make the learning fun and as someone with ADD that’s important. It does have problems though. The characters either freeze, or don’t appear at all during most of the speaking exercises. I wish you could have dark glasses and dual color hair on your avatar (ie green on top and the back black. One other thing I’ve found is that after a while you can get the computer to accept your own words as being right 😉
Overall this is a good and comprehensive app. It covers the appropriate areas with difficulty increasing at an appropriate pace, for beginners onwards. There is a variety of exercises for reading, writing and listening. Which helps maintain focus and the difficulty level progresses at ,what I feel is, an appropriate level. Personally I would like to see an option (as there is in the Busu)for talking to a native speaker of your chosen language as this helps each person improve &gain experience
It’s a fun way to learn a new language – if you’re a native English speaker. Learning foreign languages in a foreign language is still fun but can be unnecessarily hard and lead to stilted results. Oh, and the much taunted AI is pretty sad, resulting in very, very predictable training sessions. That’s possibly the app’s greatest weakness. That, and the sometimes inexplicably bad speech recognition – works well with my Blue Yeti X on the desktop but not so with several latest generation Jabras.
